The Tien Thuy is excellent value for money in Hanoi's Old Quarter. Rooms are relatively spacious and service is friendly and efficient without being pushy. As the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam, Hanois Old Quarter has a history that spans 2,000 years and represents the eternal soul of the city. Located between the Lake of the Restored Sword, the Long Bien Bridge, a former city rampart, and a citadel wall, the Old Quarter started as a snake and alligator-infested swamp. It later evolved into a cluster of villages made up of houses on stilts, and was unified by Chinese administrators who built ramparts around their headquarters. The area was named "Dominated Annam" or "Protected South" by the Chinese. | | Directions | While it's only a short walk to Hoan Kiem Lake, this area is less touristed than much of the Old Quarter. A great place to meet the locals is the An Phat Bia Hoi shop, where you can sink endless cold draughts with them for next to no money. Indeed, you could shout the entire place it's so cheap - it would be the beginning of a big night and a great story. From north end of Hoan Kiem Lake, head east along Pho Cau Co. When it veers left and becomes Hang Thung, hotel is just along on your right (south). | | Transportation | 10 minutes by taxi from train station and 40 minutes by taxi from Noi Bai airport.
